Contributing Factors on Students’ Difficulties in Comprehending Narrative Text (A Case Study of the Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 1 Batusangkar Registered in 2024/2025 Academic Year)

The problem of this research was unrevealed contributing factors on students’ difficulties in comprehending narrative text. This research was aimed to describe contributing factors on students’ difficulties in comprehending narrative text at SMAN 1 Batusangkar. This research was a qualitative research, using a case study design. The technique used in choosing informants is purposive sampling. The informants of this research was tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Batusangkar registered in 2024/2025 academic year who had difficulty in comprehending narrative text. In this research, the researcher was the key instrument and the interview guide as a supportive instrument. In collecting the data, she interviewed the nine research infomants. To ensure data validity, the researcher used member checking, namely by asking the participants to review the data, information, interpretations, and research report prepared by the researcher after the first interview. To carry out data analysis, the researcher referred to the theory (Miles and Huberman in Sari, 2022), namely data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing and data verification. The researcher conducted interviews based on the interview guide, then analyzed the results of the interviews, and drew conclusions and verified the research findings. The result of this research indicate that there were eight contributing factors on students’ difficulties in comprehending narrative text. The factors difficullties are: 1) Having limited vocabulary 2) Having low reading interest and motivation 3) Having limited familiarity with subject matter 4) Having problem in recalling information 5) Having difficulty in understanding long sentence 6) Having inadeququate instruction from teacher.

Contributing Factors on Students' Difficulties in Using English Only During Oral Presentation in ELT Methods Class

The purpose of this study to find out the contributing factors of students difficulties in using English only during oral presentation in ELT Methods class of the fifth semester students of English Department of UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar registered in 2023/2024 Academic Year. This study was qualitative research with a case study design. The informants were 20 students who followed ELT Methods Class and indicated difficulties in using English only during oral presentation. The informants were selected using the purposive sampling technique. The informants from the lecturer recommended. In this research, the researcher acted as the key instrument and the interview guide as a supporting instrument. In collecting the data, the researcher interviewed the informants. Furthermore, in analyzing the data, data reduction, data display, and data verification are used. To test the trustworthiness of the data, data triangulation is used to find clear information. The results of this research indicated that there were two contributing factors on students difficulties in using English only during oral presentation in ELT Methods class. They are linguistic factors were grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Psychological factors were anxiety/nervous, lack of confidence, difficulty in understanding the topic, fear of making mistakes, lack of focus, and lack of preparation.

Contributing Factors on Students’ Difficulties in Making Oral Presentation in Speaking for Academic Purposes Subject

The purpose of this study is to describe the contributing factors on difficulties experienced by students in presenting oral presentations on the topic of presenting oral research reports in the Speaking for Academic course. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The informant of this research were English Teaching Department students of UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar for the academic year 2023/2024 totaling 7 people who have difficulty making oral presentations in the topic of presenting oral research reports in the Speaking for Academic course determined by purposive sampling techniques. In this study, researcher functioned as a key instrument in data collection, assisted by supporting instruments in the form of interview guidelines, voice recorders and camera for documentation. To test the validity of the data, researcher conducted prolonged engagement. Furthermore, to analyze the data, researcher use the theory of Miles and Huberman (1994), namely by reducing data, presenting data, verifying data and drawing conclusions. The results showed the contributing factors on difficulties experienced by students in making oral presentations in the Speaking for Academic Purposes Subject. These difficulties are: 1) Difficulties in understanding the topic, 2) Psychological Problem, 3) Linguistic Problem (Grammar Vocabulary, Pronunciation) and 4) Teacher Expectation.

Factors Affecting Academic Failure of Research Method Course Series: In Case of Students' Opinion of UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar

Judul skripsi “FACTORS AFFECTING ACADEMIC FAILURE OF RESEARCH METHOD COURSE SERIES : IN CASE OF STUDENTS’ OPINION OF UIN MAHMUD YUNUS BATUSANGKAR Jurusan Tadris Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Tarbiyah dan Ilmu Keguruan, UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. Permasalahan dalam penelitan ini adalah ditemukan sejumlah mahasiswa kegagalan mahasiswa dalam matakuliah research method course series”. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk megetahui apa faktor dominan yang mengakibatkan kegagalan akademik pada matakuliah research method course series”. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode survey research with cross sectional design. Populasi penelitian ini adalah 117 orang mahasiswa jurusan tadris bahasa Inggris yang mengambil matakuliah Quantitative research in ELT, Qualitative research in ELT, Statistics for research in ELT. Peneliti menggunakan 25 orang sample yang mengalami kegagalan pada research method course series yang merupakan mahasiswa tadris bahasa Inggris di UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. Instrument yang digunakan adaah questionnaire yang dibuat di google form yang berisi tentang faktor-faktor penyebab kegagalan akademik di Research method course series. Instrumen divalidasi dengan validator dan kemudian divalidasi lagi menggunakan SPSS. Total item pada angket peneliti adalah 44 butir. Hasil setelah divalidasi menjadi 27 item. Kemudian data dianalisis dengan SPSS dan dianalisis dengan tehnik deskriptif menurut Sudijono (2005) dengan rumus formula (P=F/N*100). Hasil validasi dihitung dengan menggunakan r-tabel dan r-hitung. Hasil validasi menunjukkan bahwa 27 item dari angket dinyatakan valid. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan faktor dominan penyebab kegagalan pada research method course series, yang pertama Quantitative research in ELT dengan faktor dominannya adalah ketidak mampuan mahasiswa menghadapi masalah pendidikan Yang kedua, Qualitative research in ELT, ketidakmampuan mahasiswa menghadapi masalah pendidikan. Ketiga, Statistics for reseach in ELT adalah banyaknya teman sekamar di asrama.

Students' Affective Factors in Speaking Performance at State Islamic University Batusangkar

The problem of this research was motivated by the obstacles experienced by students when appearing in front of the class which resulted in these students not being optimal when speaking performance in learning English for Simple Speech Presentation at State Islamic University Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. The purpose of this study was to determine the affective factors felt by students when speaking performance in the English for Simple Speech Presentation course. The research design was descriptive quantitative. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire of 94 items. Questionnaires were distributed via google form. Researchers used random sampling, with 36 people selected as samples. The results showed that there were four affective factors experienced by students when appearing in front of the class in learning English for Simple Speech Presentation. The first affective factor is the motivation that students have when speaking performance, which is 28.18%, then self-esteem is 27.34%, while fear of making mistakes is 23.30%, the lowest is anxiety as much as 21.16%.

An Analysis of Psychological Factors Affecting Students' Difficulties in Writing Thesis at UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar

This study aimed at finding out the psychological factors affecting students’ difficulties in writing thesis. This study used a quantitative descriptive method involving 58 tenth semester, twelvft semester and fourteenth semester students of the English Education Department of UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar for the 2021/2022 academic year, as the population of this study. The researcher using a questionnaire as an instrument and a one-shot try out technique at the time of data collection which was analyzed using Sugiyono's theory. Based on the results of the study, there were 8 psyhological factors found when doing the thesis. The psychological factors are: high self-esteem factor, low self-esteem factor, somatic factor, cognitive factor, avoidance behavioral factor, persistance factor, direction factor, and intensity factor. The highest factor is low self-esteem in positive category with percentage 74,14%. Then it may be concluded that there is a psychological factors affecting students’in writing thesis.

Factors Causing EFL Students' Writing Anxiety

Writing is an activity or process to express ideas or opinion. One of the factors that affect the quality of writing is the anxiety factor. If the student suffered writing anxiety, it will affect the quality of writing and academic achievement. This research was aimed to describe the factors causing EFL students’ writing anxiety in English Teaching Department UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. The participants were 57 students in the fourth semester students of the English Teaching Department UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar registered in 2021/2022 academic year. The design of the research was descriptive quantitative research. In conducting the research, the instrument was questionnaire which used several theories compiled by several experts. The findings of this research showed that there are several factors causing EFL students’ writing anxiety which found in this research, such as: fear of the test factor (19,8), insufficient writing practice (19,59), instructional practice (15,15%), linguistic difficulty (14,86%), fear of negative evaluation factors (11,06), students personal emotions (10, 25 %) and topic choice (9,29%). In addition, there are several factors which didn’t found in this research, such as: lectures attitude and time pressure.
