Teachers’ Readiness in Using Digital Technology in Teaching English at SD Islam Raudhatul Jannah Payakumbuh

English Teaching Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, Islamic State University of Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. The problem in this study is the readiness of English teachers in using digital technology at the elementary school level has not been revealed. The objective of this study is to identify the types of digital technologies used by teachers during English language teaching in elementary school and to describe English teachers' readiness in using digital technology in English language learning at SD Islam Raudhatul Jannah Payakumbuh. The research method used was Qualitative Research with a Case Study design. The researcher employed purposive sampling technique to select informants. The informants of this research are three English teachers who teach at SD Islam Raudhatul Jannah Payakumbuh. In this research, the researcher function as the key instrument in data collection and it is assisted by a supporting instrument, namely an interview guide. To test the validity of the data, the researcher conducted time triangulation of data by comparing the first and second interviews. Furthermore, for data analysis, the researcher utilized the theory of Miles & Huberman (1994), which involves: data reduction, displaying and presenting data, and verifying data and drawing conclusions. The research findings show that the types of digital technology that are often used by teachers at SD Islam Raudhatul Jannah Payakumbuh are PowerPoint and Quizizz Application. Furthermore, based on the results of the research that has been conducted, teachers at SD Islam Raudhatul Jannah Payakumbuh have good emotional readiness in carrying out their teaching duties using digital technology in elementary schools seen from teacher's willingness, adaptability, comfort and confidence. Cognitively, it can be said that teachers have been quite proficient in using and applying the use of digital technology in elementary schools. Meanwhile, teachers at SD Islam Raudhatul Jannah Payakumbuh show that they are ready to use digital technology in terms of behaviour. Teachers not only understand the importance of technology in education, but also have integrated digital technology into their teaching methods in an effective and adaptive way. So it can be concluded that teachers at SD Islam Raudhatul Jannah Payakumbuh have the readiness in using digital technology during the English learning process.

Reading Self-Efficacy of English Teaching Department Students at UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar

Program Studi Tadris Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Tarbiyah dan Ilmu Keguruan Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. Faktor membaca dengan pemahaman dipengaruhi oleh faktor psikologis seperti self-efficacy. Pemahaman dalam membaca telah menjadi suatu kemampuan yang wajib dikuasai oleh mahasiswa guna mendukung proses pembelajaran mereka. Oleh karena itu, dalam penelitian ini mengungkapkan bagaimana reading self-efficacy mahasiswa Program Studi Tadris Bahasa Inggris di Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan seberapa besar reading self-efficacy mahasiswa dalam konteks pemahaman dalam membaca. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan cross-sectional design. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa Program Studi Tadris Bahasa Inggris yan terdaftar di semester ganjil tahun 2023/2024 dan telah menyelesaikan perkuliahan Reading sebanyak 219 orang. Sample dalam penelitian ini berjumlah 69 orang. Peneliti menggunakan teknik stratified random sampling. Instrumen yang digunakan adalah angket Reading Self-Efficacy Scale yang dirancang oleh Kosar dkk., (2022). Instrumen ini telah teruji validitas dan reliabilitasnya, sehingga memungkinkan pengukuran yang tepat untuk mengukur reading self-efficacy mahasiswa. Peneliti menggunakan angket untuk memperoleh data dan menganalisis data menggunakan statistik deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan reading self-efficacy mahasiswa Program Studi Tadris Bahasa Inggris berada dalam high category dengan persentase 64% mahasiswa memiliki keyakinan yang tinggi bahwa mereka dapat memahami teks bacaan bahasa Inggris pada saat perkuliahan reading. Mayoritas mahasiswa dari kedua gender berada dalam kategori high self-efficacy, dengan persentase mahasiswa perempuan (66,0%) sedikit lebih tinggi dibandingkan mahasiswa laki-laki (59,1%). Dapat disimpulkan bahwa tidak ada perbedaan signifikan dalam kategori self-efficacy dalam membaca antara mahasiswa perempuan dan laki-laki.

Teachers' Role in Building Students' Character through English Language Teaching Classroom

Teacher plays an essential role in education process. The success of a learning process in changing students behavior depends on how well the teacher treat the students. The teachers also have to be a good model for the student in every classroom interaction. Teaching English will be meaningful when the teacher can integrate the teaching process into the development of students’ character. When the students behave with proper manner in society, the education process can be said meet the goal of education. Any subject matter in education needs to concern about this issue, especially in English language teaching. The students are not only taught about the linguistic structure of the language but also how their character can be built through the classroom interaction. This paper aims to give an overview about the teachers’ role in building student’s character through English language teaching classroom. It is dealing with what is the nature of character and its importance in education. It also describes the roles of teacher as character educator and how to integrate character education into English language teaching which can be done through some way, such as habituation, integrating character education into English material, cooperative learning in English teaching classroom and Instructional Media of English Teaching.

Developing Students' Language Awareness through Discovery Learning in English Language Teaching

Language acquisition has strong relation with language awareness which is very important in order to be a good language user, because it is a person‘s compassion to and sentient awareness of language and its function in human life. It deals with overt knowledge about language, and conscious perception and sensitivity in language learning, language teaching and language use. Language awareness includes the knowledge about language, a conscious understanding of how languages work, of how people learn them and use them. In English language teaching the use of language in classroom interaction is not only for communication, it is also used to deliver norm through language, meanwhile in Indonesia, most of student is multilingual where they have already acquired languages, including their mother tongue and their national language, the students‘ awareness in learning foreign language such English is a crucial issue to be considered. One of technique that can be used to develop students‘ language awareness is through discovery learning. It is an inquiry-based theory which engages students to be active actors in their own process of learning, including in language learning. Discovery learning in English language teaching allows the students to work on language by having a role in their own learning and developing their activity through the language. So, this paper aims to give an overview how to apply discovery learning in English language teaching to develop student language awareness.
