The Correlation between Students' Use of ChatGPT and Their Argumentative Writing Ability

The development of artificial intelligence, particularly ChatGPT, has changed the way students complete academic writing tasks, including argumentative writing. ChatGPT assists students in generating ideas, improving grammar, and organizing their writing more effectively. However, the increasing use of this technology has raised questions about whether it is related to students' argumentative writing ability. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the correlation between students' use of ChatGPT and their argumentative writing ability. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between students' use of ChatGPT and their argumentative writing ability among sixth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational research design. The population consisted of 31 sixth-semester students who had completed the Argumentative Writing course, and all of them were selected as the sample using the total sampling technique. Data were collected through a questionnaire to measure students' use of ChatGPT and an argumentative writing test to measure their argumentative writing ability. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Spearman Rank correlation test with SPSS version 22. The findings revealed that there was no significant correlation between students' use of ChatGPT and their argumentative writing ability. The Spearman Rank correlation analysis produced a correlation coefficient of -0.088 with a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.638, which was higher than 0.05. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected. These findings indicate that students' use of ChatGPT did not have a significant relationship with their argumentative writing ability. Perkembangan kecerdasan buatan, khususnya ChatGPT, telah mengubah cara mahasiswa menyelesaikan tugas menulis akademik, termasuk penulisan argumentatif. ChatGPT membantu mahasiswa menghasilkan ide, memperbaiki tata bahasa, dan menyusun tulisan dengan lebih efektif. Namun, meningkatnya penggunaan teknologi ini menimbulkan pertanyaan mengenai apakah penggunaannya berhubungan dengan kemampuan menulis argumentatif mahasiswa. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengkaji korelasi antara penggunaan ChatGPT oleh mahasiswa dan kemampuan menulis argumentatif mereka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui korelasi antara penggunaan ChatGPT oleh mahasiswa dan kemampuan menulis argumentatif mahasiswa semester enam Program Studi Tadris Bahasa Inggris UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain penelitian korelasional. Populasi penelitian terdiri atas 31 mahasiswa semester enam yang telah menempuh mata kuliah Argumentative Writing, dan seluruh populasi dijadikan sampel menggunakan teknik total sampling. Data dikumpulkan melalui angket untuk mengukur penggunaan ChatGPT oleh mahasiswa serta tes menulis argumentatif untuk mengukur kemampuan menulis argumentatif mahasiswa. Data dianalisis menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan uji korelasi Spearman Rank dengan bantuan SPSS versi 22. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tidak terdapat korelasi yang signifikan antara penggunaan ChatGPT oleh mahasiswa dan kemampuan menulis argumentatif mereka. Hasil analisis korelasi Spearman Rank menunjukkan koefisien korelasi sebesar -0,088 dengan nilai signifikansi (Sig. 2-tailed) sebesar 0,638, yang lebih besar dari 0,05. Oleh karena itu, hipotesis alternatif (Ha) ditolak. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan ChatGPT tidak memiliki hubungan yang signifikan dengan kemampuan menulis argumentatif mahasiswa.

THE EFFECT OF USING 3D VISUAL MEDIA ON STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO WRITE DESCRIPTIVE TEXTS ( A Study at Eighth Grade Students of SMP NEGERI 3 BATUSANGKAR)

ABSTRACT SRI WAHYUNI, No. Reg. 2030104060, entitled: “The Effect of Using 3D Visual Media on Students’ Ability to Write Descriptive Texts (A Study at Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 3 Batusangkar)”, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University (UIN) Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. The problem in this study was whether the use of 3D visual media had a significant effect on students’ ability to write descriptive texts. The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of using 3D visual media on students’ ability to write descriptive texts at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 3 Batusangkar. This study was quantitative research using a quasi-experimental design, specifically a post-test only control group design. The population of this study was all eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Batusangkar. The samples consisted of two classes: an experimental class with 29 students and a control class with 28 students. The experimental class was taught using 3D visual media, while the control class was taught using conventional teaching methods. The data were collected through a writing test in the form of descriptive text. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and an independent samples t-test. The results of this research showed that the mean score of the experimental class was 74.86, while the mean score of the control class was 54.00. The result of the t-test showed that the t-value was 8.197 with a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which was lower than the significance level of 0.05. It indicated that there was a significant difference between students who were taught using 3D visual media and those who were taught using conventional methods. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the use of 3D visual media had a significant positive effect on students’ ability to write descriptive texts. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers apply 3D visual media as an alternative teaching medium to enhance students’ writing skills, particularly in teaching descriptive texts.
