Crime Is Not the Problem

2016 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

In Crime is Not the Problem, Franklin Zimring and Gordon Hawkins revolutionize the way we think about crime and violence--by forcing us to distinguish between crime and violence. The authors reveal that compared to other industrialized nations, in most categories of nonviolent crime, American crime rates are comparable--even lower, in some cases. Only when it comes to lethal violence does the United States outpace other Western nations, with homicide rates many, many times greater. London and New York City have nearly the same number of robberies and burglaries each year, but robbers and burglars kill 54 victims in New York for every victim death in London. Why are the risks so much greater that victims will be killed or maimed in the United States? And what can be done to bring the death rate from American violence down to tolerable levels? The authors show how the impact of television and movie violence on rates of homicide is wildly overrated, but emphasize the paramount importance of guns. By making the crucial distinction between lethal violence and crime in general, the authors clear the ground for a targeted, far more effective response to the real crisis in American society. Crime is Not the Problem will reshape the debate about crime control in the United States.

How Do You Spell Ruzevelt?

2016 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

Much was at stake in early America as its people struggled to use an evolving language to meet the challenge of new political, economic, and social arrangements. It should come as no surprise, then, that language – in both its spoken and written forms – is fundamentally entwined in national and personal identity. Publishers, politicians, dreamers, schemers, and reformers understood its importance early on, and they sought to bend language to their will. While some think spelling is no longer relevant because of spell check, the author – who grew up participating in spelling bees – disagrees. She explores the rich history of language and spelling, and answers questions such as: Which founding father proposed eliminating the letters J and C from the alphabet? Who spells better: boys or girls? Who won the first national spelling bee? The author also explores her own love and difficulties with spelling, including the mistake that bounced her out of the 1961 National Spelling Bee. Whether you’re a historian, educator, student or simply someone passionate about the written word, you’ll be delighted by the fun-filled facts and answers to obscure questions in How Do You Spell Ruzevelt?

Acts of Teaching: How to Teach Writing: A Text, A Reader, A Narrative, 2nd Edition

2016 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

Carroll and Wilson have taken their successful Acts of Teaching into the 21st Century with this totally revised second edition. While maintaining the best of Acts, Acts II moves the paradigm into the global age. Comprehensive, innovative, and practical, and with forewords by two of the most noted scholars in the field, Janet Emig and Edmund J. Farrell, this text offers educators a powerful approach to teaching writing. Rather than repetitive exercises, it focuses on engagement and interaction so students grapple with words and experiences to make meaning. In Acts II the writing process and assessment gain a new dimension. Recent research supports its content and strategies while cognitive development and neurological theories, early literacy, inquiry, and writing as a mode of learning across all disciplines and grade levels have been invigorated. Topics include students, shifts and skills for the global age, the writing process, and assessment, three chapters on how to teach grammar within the writing process, collaboration, post writing, and publishing. This book meets the needs of anyone writing or teaching writing. Grades PreK-12.

HOW TO LEARN AND TEACH IN MEDICAL SCHOOL

2016 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

This book can be used by students, faculty, and administrators to enhance the process of medical education. Medical students can use it to develop and refine their learning skills, assess their individual learning needs, identify resources to meet these needs, and to prepare themselves for critical learning events and transitions. Faculty can use this book to understand the learning process and develop teaching skills, thereby providing a framework for critically assessing how they teach. Administrators can use it to expose inadequacies in the medical education process and to strengthen the teaching and learning environment. Certain chapters of this book could serve as required readings for a medical school course on learning. The development and implementation of such a course, and the commensurate application of the espoused principles of learning and teaching to the educational process, would signal true medical educational reform. It would signify that critical attention is being paid to those aspects of learning medicine thought to be crucial: reading the literature, self-directedness, critical thinking/problem solving, lifelong learning and creativity. Such a course would be as important as any basic science course or clinical rotation to the training of future physicians who would use these skills throughout their professional lives. The book could serve as a foundation for faculty development with medical educators. In this regard, Part One provides insight into how medical students learn and has significant implications for teaching. Parts Two and Three provide practical guidelines for teaching and curriculum development from a learner-cen-tered perspective.
