Alphaville hotel
A writer grappling with his characters – or is it the other way around? – in an impish homage to Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina. Followed by 'A tale without a name', a layered short story plugged into the age of the internet and human incommunicability. With these two short fictions, Wiwat Lertwiwatwongsa, a noted film critic, takes pole position in cutting-edge Thai writing.
A Treasury of Virtues
A Treasury of Virtues is a collection of sayings, sermons, and teachings attributed to ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (d. 40H/661AD), cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, first Shi’a Imam and fourth Sunni Caliph. ‘Ali was an acknowledged master of Arabic eloquence and a renowned sage of Islamic wisdom. Through proverbs and aphorisms, sermons and speeches, prayers and supplications, epistles and contracts, testimonials and homilies, verse and dialogues, it provides instruction on how to be a decent human being. And it combines these ethical teachings with religious exhortations and preparation for eternal life in the hereafter. Moreover, the lessons of the text are clothed in the cadenced parallelisms of a consummate oral culture, and the vivid metaphors of the Arabian desert. Appealing to the addressee’s higher nature, they also beguile his aesthetic sensibilities, integrating art and edification in an exquisite package of verbal ingenuity. Of the many compilations of ‘Ali’s words, A Treasury of Virtues arguably possesses the broadest compass of genres, and the largest variety of themes. The shorter One Hundred Proverbs is also a compilation of ‘Ali’s words. Attributed to al-Jahiz (“the father of Arabic prose”), it has a celebrity status in its own category and its pithy one-liners are quotable quotes of the finest order. This volume presents the first English translation of both these important texts, with a new critical edition based on several original manuscripts.

Rafilus mati dua kali. Kemarin dia mati. ENDORSEMENT “Dalam kisah manusia magis bernama Rafilus, niscaya kita temukan benderang mutiara-mutiara perenungan.”

Killing the Celt
Killing the Celt is a collection of short fiction, metafiction, and nonfiction pieces that include Celtic history, social and political satire, travel narratives, pop-culture musings, and memoir. The book's 31 essays and stories are framed within brief histories of the six Celtic holocausts, and bound together with a Celtic sensibility marked by dark, anarchic humor; a love of place, time, and culture; and a steely distrust of authority. In Killing the Celt, you will: Travel to the hillfort at South Cadbury, thought to be the site of Arthur's Camelot. Find out why Elvis was a Celtic man and the Beatles were a Celtic band. Follow the adventures of the Celtic deus ex machina, a strange, kilted little fellow who always shows up, outrageously, at just the right time. Visit the Rebel Grill, a Southern bar-b-que joint, in the gray, empty spaces of Northern England. Ultimately, Killing the Celt is about the slow passing of Celtic culture, the fountainhead of the Western imagination, into the twilight of time. (www.killingthecelt.com)

Journal of a Novel
This collection of letters forms a fascinating day-by-day account of Steinbeck's writing of EAST OF EDEN, his longest and most ambitious novel. The letters, ranging over many subjects - textual discussion, trial flights of workmanship, family matters - provide an illuminating perspective on Steinbeck, the creative genius, and a private glimpse of Steinbeck, the man.

How to Teach Speaking?
We want our students to speak. We want them to speak fluently and accurately. But how can we encourage the shy student to speak? On what do we have to pay attention to when we do speaking exercises? How to correct mistakes to help our students to improve their language level? In the following essay I will focus on these main questions about teaching speaking. Furthermore I will try to compare the theory with my own experience as a teacher?

Perception and Passion in Dante's Comedy
Patrick Boyde argues that the way in which Dante represents what he (or his fictional self) saw and felt was profoundly influenced by the thirteenth-century science of psychology. Professor Boyde offers an authoritative account of the way in which vision and the emotions were understood in Dante's lifetime, and rereads many of the most dramatic and moving episodes in the Comedy, throwing light on Dante's narrative technique. Seeing and feeling were known to be inextricably bound up with thinking and voluntary action, and were treated as special cases of motion and motive forces. Dante's treatment of perception and passion is set in the context of Aristotelian epistemology, ethics and physics. In these areas too a knowledge of Dante's philosophical ideas is shown to illuminate his poetic representation of mental processes and value judgements, and the meaning of his journey towards the source of goodness and truth.
