English Teaching Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. This Research development of artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly influenced academic writing practices in higher education. One of the most widely used AI-based writing tools is QuillBot, which provides support for paraphrasing, grammar correction, and vocabulary development. Although QuillBot is considered helpful in improving writing efficiency, its increasing use has also generated debates regarding academic integrity, writing skill development, and students’ independence in learning. Consequently, a systematic examination of existing studies is necessary to obtain a clearer understanding of how QuillBot is discussed and applied in higher education contexts. This study aims to synthesize previous research by identifying key themes, academic skills, and research methodologies related to the use of QuillBot in higher education from 2021 to 2025. A qualitative library research design was employed using a thematic review approach. The data were collected from thirteen peer-reviewed research articles published in reputable national and international journals indexed in Sinta (1–6) and Scopus (Q1–Q4). The selected articles were analyzed through thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and dominant trends across the literature. The findings indicate that six major themes frequently emerge in QuillBot-related studies, including students’ perceptions and attitudes, improvement of writing performance and quality, plagiarism prevention and academic integrity, affective factors such as anxiety and motivation, efficiency and time management, and the implementation of QuillBot in higher education settings. Additionally, the review reveals that the use of QuillBot contributes to the development of various academic skills, such as paraphrasing ability, grammatical accuracy, vocabulary selection, writing confidence, critical reading, summarizing skills, digital literacy, and academic sentence structuring. The reviewed studies also employ diverse methodological approaches, ranging from quantitative and qualitative designs to mixed methods and systematic literature reviews. In conclusion, QuillBot can function as a supportive tool in academic writing when used responsibly and critically. Its integration into higher education should be accompanied by clear ethical guidelines and pedagogical supervision to ensure that students remain active and independent contributors in the academic writing process.
