The Experience of Being an Immigrant

[Abstract] The study examined international immigration to the United States. It focused on the effects of immigrants' experience during the immigration process. The investigation searched into ethnic identification among fifteen first generation adult immigrants who all residing in the Detroit Metropolitan area. The goal was to arrive at the nature, meanings, and essences of the experience. Data were collected from Arab (Muslim), Chaldean (Christian), and European (Jewish) immigrants during lengthy face to face interviews. A heuristic design and methodology guided preparation, collection and analysis of data. A qualitative research paradigm was selected as appropriate for culturally sensitive research. Open-ended interviews with co-researchers aimed to obtain in-depth narratives--perceptions, thoughts and feelings inherent in the experience of being an immigrant. From the interviews, depictions, and portraits, a composite depiction and creative synthesis were developed. The heterogeneous character of each ethnic group was emphasized. Alternative strategies were suggested for conducting additional research and guidelines were proposed related to clinical practice efforts relevant to newly arrived immigrants. The findings of the study included the following themes: intense loss, grief, and personal struggles inherent in the process along, with gifts of awareness and acceptance. The data also revealed developmental and coping stages of the immigration process. The study suggests that multicultural competencies are needed by psychologists, educators and others in human service fields who counsel, guide and support immigrants during the challenges involved in affirming ethnic identity while mastering the language and ways of the dominant culture.

The Valley of Mud Brick Architecture

By examining in close detail the cities of Shibam and Tarim, Dr Damluji analyses the ways in which the buildings of the Hadramut region are distinguished from other forms of local Arab architecture. In many Arab regions (including parts of Yemen) 'modern', 'Western' town planning and building methods have displaced original architectural forms; typically the traditionally-built, older areas tend not to be supplied with basic services such as sewers, and have quickly degenerated into slum districts, while the 'modern' areas are regarded as more desirable. However, the author argues that many of these new building practices and materials are innately unsuited to an Arab environment, and are in fact inferior to the authentic styles of architecture. Amongst her reasons are that this 'modernity' (in both its planning and use of materials) lacks consideration of climatic needs, and that its execution is technically inferior to that achieved by master builders who have long experience of the building art and a long-established and sophisticated method of construction. Moreover, the new style presupposes not only 'imported' authority or expertise in the form of the engineers, but also imported raw materials (concrete, steel) and therefore has implications for both the economy and for architectural autonomy and style. Dr Damluji concludes that the mud-brick architecture in the Hadramut region of southern Yemen offers a unique source of cultural and technical knowledge. This uniqueness lies in the contemporary nature of the architecture, which has not been displaced by imported, 'modern' techniques but has adjusted to keep pace with the changing needs of the society it serves. The architecture represents a real asset in the local building sector and contributes to the national sense of identity. It is thus not only an ancient design but also a valid twentieth century architecture ideally suited to the local environment. This important work describes in detail the history of the region, the rationale of traditional town-planning, and both building processes, design concepts and materials in contemporary use. It is richly illustrated with the author's own photographs and line drawings.

Flourishing Children

This volume presents the results of the Flourishing Children Project. The study addressed gaps in the research on indicators of positive development of adolescents. Such indicators are essential for the balanced and scientifically sound study of adolescents. Yet measures of many aspects of flourishing are not available, and when they do exist, they are rarely measured in a developmentally appropriate manner for adolescents. In addition, they are often too long for program evaluations and surveys, have not been tested on diverse populations, nor carefully validated as predictors of positive outcomes. The Flourishing Children Project undertook the development of scales for adolescents ages 12-17 for 19 aspects of flourishing covering six domains: flourishing in school and work, personal flourishing, flourishing in relationships, relationship skills, helping others to flourish, and environmental stewardship. This volume describes the four-stage process of developing the scales, including: Reviewing the literature for extant measures for items to test and synthesizing the existing research into consensus definitions for each construct; conducting cognitive testing of items with adolescents and their parents; pilot testing the items; and conducting psychometric analyses.

In this research, ID3 decision tree technique of data mining is applied on widely used benchmark data set. The main focus of this research was on designing and implementation of a model that predicts the success of bank telemarketing using decision tree technique of data mining.
