The Correlation Between Students' Speaking Anxiety and Their Speaking Performance
ABSTRACT This study was conducted to find the relationship between students’ speaking anxiety and their speaking performance in fourth semester students of UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. The purpose of this study was to reveal the relationship between students’ speaking anxiety and their speaking performance. The type of research is quantitative research in the form of correlations. The population of this study was 68 fourth semester students of English Teaching Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar in the 2022/2023 academic year. The process of collecting the data was accomplished through the application of simple random sampling technique, utilizing the Slovin’s formula. Based on this method, 58 people were obtained as research samples. There are two insturements used in this research, which are questionnaire and students’ speaking score. To collect the data, the researcher used a questionnaire contains thirty three items to determine students’ speaking anxiety. The questionnaire was adapted from FLCAS by Horwits et.al. The researcher also used the students' speaking scores to see their speaking performance. The data obtained was then analyzed using descriptive and inferential analysis. In processing the data, the researcher used the SPSS version 25 computer program. The results of this research indicate a relationship between students' speaking anxiety and their speaking performance where the r-calculated (0.382) is higher than the r-table (0.258) with a significance level of five percent. This means that Ho is rejected, so Ha is accepted. In addition, based on the results of the correlation test calculation between students' speaking anxiety and students' speaking scores, it shows that there is a significant negative relationship between students' anxiety and their speaking performance scores. It can be concluded that speaking anxiety has a relationship with students' speaking performance.
