Lingua francas are languages used for communication between individuals for whom they are not the first language. Based on empirical work throughout, the individual contributions to this volume address lingua franca communication from sociolinguistic as well as from conversation analytic perspectives, or place this form of communication within the wider context of foreign language teaching. The volume as a whole attempts to broaden the traditional view of lingua francas as languages employed by non-native speakers to serve specific, restricted communicative purposes only. Instead, it is demonstrated that lingua francas have gained a number of varied functions, and that they are employed by a heterogeneous group of speakers for whom they do not always have the same status of a second or foreign language. The papers reveal intriguing similarities in form across different lingua francas, but also point at significant differences. As a result, it is proposed that approaches to teach lingua francas as such need to be developed on the basis of empirical evidence. Contents: C. Meierkord/K. Essay from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: 1,0, University of Applied Sciences Kempten (Professional School of Business and Technology Kempten), course: Strategic Logistics Management, language: English, abstract: In future industry competition will be increasingly “supply chain vs. supply chain”, rather than “firm vs. firm”. So today, the efficient management of global supply chain networks already has the potential to create competitive advantages for companies. Nevertheless most industrial companies still focus on production efficiency, creating non-market oriented business solutions that disable fast adaption to changing customer requirements. In more and more saturated markets a technology-driven competitive advantage is often quickly compensated by low-cost countries. In contrast high service quality established by efficient logistics processes can hardly be adopted in short time. The ability of fast consumer response allows companies to create an added value the customer is willing to pay for. But empowering companies to offer this added value requires high management attention on logistics processes as well as a clear logistics strategy with defined objectives that meet the company’s abilities and the customer requirements. Several management tools like the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) model or the Balanced Scorecard provide a structured approach to realize competitive advantages in the management of supply chains. After a short theoretical survey of these tools, a suitable logistics balanced scorecard will be developed for the supply chain activities of Diehl Controls, an electronics manufacturer for home appliances. Based on the company’s logistics mission and vision statement, internal and external strategic objectives will be determined. In a further step, the controlling of these objectives will be ensured by creating suitable performance indicators. Finally the Diehl Controls logistics balanced scorecard will be introduced to the company’s organization. The term paper ends with a recommendation of future developments and enlargements of the balanced scorecard related to the company’s growth within the next years.

Strategic Total Quality Management is a new way of looking at quality. It views quality from corporate performance and product quality. Corporate performance is measured by the response of the firm to the emerging changes in its business environment. These changes are detected by customers and the firm's response may influence their purchasing behavior. Therefore, the competitiveness and the survivability of the firm is threatened if these factors are not adequately considered. Emphasis is shifted away from the product-based definition of quality to a broader view of quality. The book provides research-based analysis and pratical guidance for business professionals, academics, and graduate students.

Before 9/11, few Westerners had heard of Wahhabism. Today, it is a household word. Frequently mentioned in association with Osama bin Laden, Wahhabism is portrayed by the media and public officials as an intolerant, puritanical, militant interpretation of Islam that calls for the wholesale destruction of the West in a jihad of global proportions. In the first study ever undertaken of the writings of Wahhabism's founder, Muhammad Ibn Abd al-Wahhab (1702-1791), Natana DeLong-Bas shatters these stereotypes and misconceptions. Her reading of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's works produces a revisionist thesis: Ibn Abd al-Wahhab was not the godfather of contemporary terrorist movements. Rather, he was a voice of reform, reflecting mainstream 18th-century Islamic thought. His vision of Islamic society was based upon a monotheism in which Muslims, Christians and Jews were to enjoy peaceful co-existence and cooperative commercial and treaty relations. Eschewing medieval interpretations of the Quran and hadith (sayings and deeds of the prophet Muhammad), Ibn Abd al-Wahhab called for direct, historically contextualized interpretation of scripture by both women and men. His understanding of theology and Islamic law was rooted in Quranic values, rather than literal interpretations. A strong proponent of women's rights, he called for a balance of rights between women and men both within marriage and in access to education and public space. In the most comprehensive study of Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's interpretation of jihad ever written, DeLong-Bas details a vision in which jihad is strictly limited to the self-defense of the Muslim community against military aggression. Contemporary extremists like Osama bin Laden do not have their origins in Wahhabism, she shows. The hallmark jihadi focus on a cult of martyrdom, the strict division of the world into two necessarily opposing spheres, the wholescale destruction of both civilian life and property, and the call for global jihad are entirely absent from Ibn Abd al-Wahhab's writings. Instead, the militant stance of contemporary jihadism lies in adherence to the writings of the medieval scholar, Ibn Taymiyya, and the 20th century Egyptian radical, Sayyid Qutb. This pathbreaking book fills an enormous gap in the literature about Wahhabism by returning to the original writings of its founder. Bound to be controversial, it will be impossible to ignore.
