English Teaching Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University (UIN) Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. The problem addressed in this study is the varied responses shown by seventh grade students of SMPN 2 Sungai Tarab during the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) by pre-service teacher in teaching English. Therefore, this study aimed to describe students' perception, both in general and specifically, toward the implementation of project-based learning in teaching English to the seventh-grade students of SMPN 2 Sungai Tarab. This study employed a descriptive quantitative research design. The population consisted of 22 seventh grade students of SMPN 2 Sungai Tarab who had experienced learning English through project-based learning in the 2025/2026 academic year. The respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through a questionnaire using a Likert scale, developed based on cognitive, affective, and conative indicators and the data was analyzed by using SPSS version 25. The findings showed that, in general, students had a positive perception of PjBL implemented by the pre-service teacher. In the cognitive aspect, students had positive perceptions of understanding and evaluation the learning materials but neutral perceptions of applying. In the affective aspect, students showed positive perceptions of interest and motivation, while satisfaction was neutral. In the conative aspect, students showed positive perceptions of participation and behavioral responses but neutral in collaboration. Overall, PjBL implemented by the pre-service teacher contributed to students’ positive perceptions of English learning at SMPN 2 Sungai Tarab.
