ABSTRACT DINA BERLIANA SARI, Reg. Num. 2230104007, entitled “STUDENTS’ REASONS FOR USING CODE-SWITCHING IN SPEAKING FOR EXPOSITORY PURPOSES: A QUALITATIVE STUDY”, English Teaching Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University (UIN) Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar, 2026. Students in the Speaking for Expository Purposes course experienced difficulties in expressing ideas, maintaining presentation flow, and managing psychological pressure, which led some of them to use code-switching. However, the reasons for this use were not clearly understood. Previous studies had examined code-switching in EFL contexts, but limited attention had been given to students’ reasons for using it specifically in expository speaking. Therefore, this study aimed to explore these reasons. This study employed a descriptive qualitative design. The participants were third-semester students of the English Teaching Department in the 2025/2026 Academic Year who had experience using code-switching during presentations. They were selected through snowball sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. The findings revealed five themes: linguistic, communicative, cognitive, psychological, and social reasons. Students used code-switching to overcome language difficulties, maintain communication, organize ideas, manage psychological pressure, and interact with their audience. These findings showed that code-switching served as a strategic practice for managing the demands of expository speaking.
