Abstrak
This research is to explore students’ opinions of using ChatGPT in writing thesis proposal. Many students face difficulties during the thesis proposal writing process such as difficulties with English language skills, limited understanding of research methods, and psychological issue. The role of ChatGPT is a tool in assisting students to finish their coursework in writing thesis proposal instantly. Students usually use ChatGPT to find relevant information about the issues in writing thesis proposal. This study aims to explore students' opinion of using ChatGPT in thesis proposal writing process. This research employed a qualitative research method with a descriptive qualitative design. The informants of this research were eighth-semester students of the English Teaching Department at UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar in the 2024/2025 academic year. The informants were selected using a snowball sampling technique in which data were collected to start small sample until expanding larger. In this research, the researcher acted as the key instrument. The data were collected through in depth interviews, analyzed using data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing and member checking was applied to ensure the trustworthiness of the data. The findings of this research show students’ opinion in using ChatGPT. ChatGPT helps students in generating ideas, improving grammar, and organizing proposal structure. However, the students also face several issues, including limited its usage, inaccurate information, and lack of research methodology understanding.
