"When Salma, a young Muslim girl growing up in a South Indian village, was 13 years old, her family shut her away for eight years, forbidding her to study and forcing her into marriage. After her wedding her husband insisted she stay indoors. Salma was unable to venture outside for nearly two and a half decades. During that time, words became her salvation. She began covertly composing poems on scraps of paper, and, through an intricate system, smuggled them to the outside world. The poems, many of which are included here, describe the hardships Salma and countless women like her suffer in their secluded lives. Eventually they reached a local publisher who printed them. Against all odds, and in a direct challenge to the stultifying traditions of her village, Salma has gone on to become a renowned Tamil poet and influential human rights activist" --

This mixed-methods research documents the self-reports of novice higher education faculty of Pakistan about the contribution of the microteaching module of Master Trainer Faculty Professional Development Program (MT-FPDP) as well as the factors that either supported or hindered faculty in using their new knowledge and skills. My literature review on microteaching, which until recently had been a neglected field for two decades, includes higher education development needs as 'adults-teaching-adults,' microteaching as a response to novice teaching issues, and a contextual analysis of the model in different settings. I analyze and interpret the findings using a conceptual framework that synthesizes adult learning, self-efficacy, and reflective practices. This research finds that the opportunities to practice their teaching skills, with an intentional reflective feedback mechanism, allowed the novice faculty to prepare themselves in a safe and collaborative environment during MT-FPDP. However, microteaching content, activities, and supplementary material were neither closely relevant to varied teaching contexts of Pakistan nor appropriate in its application at the higher education level. Moreover, the lack of supervisors' expertise to facilitate the microteaching processes, and mentor the novices discouraged the participation. Despite these hindrances, the novices reported behavior modification, self-efficacy, and use of reflective practices in their classrooms. However, discouraging organizational culture/policies, lack of collegial, administrative, and technical support, and geopolitical factors are the primary barriers to the implementation of the knowledge and skills. The Heads of Department (HoDs)/Deans confirmed the carryover from MT-FPDP to classroom teaching, and acknowledged these institutional supports and barriers. This research argues that the microteaching content and model must be adapted to the context of Pakistan, and the microteaching skills should be prioritized based on the higher education faculty needs. The Learning Innovation Division (LID) of the Pakistan Higher Education Commission (HEC) needs to appoint expert, unbiased, and culturally sensitive supervisors who can provide novices more self-directed, transformative, and reflective learning opportunities during MT-FPDP. LID/HEC should provide avenues for collaboration and coordination by establishing the informal "communities of practice" to foster collegial support within an institution and within a province.

This spread of genes must have brought in many good and bad genes. Bad genes causing different diseases as the one understudy. The similarity of loci for non-syndromic deafness in this study can be associated with the population movement and their diffusion. This shows that occupational and cultural exchanges are the agents for the exchange and spread of genes.Building of global networks for human diseases and establishment of biobank will have a crucial role in the identification of genes associated with disease a prerequisite to designing adequate diagnostic and therapeutic tools. To maximize their impact and chances of success, collaboration at a global scale is highly describle. These latest technologies to provide therapy for genetic diseases may be the outcome of population movements in the olden times, now being realized to find commonality of genetic disease at global level. The aim of this biobank is to bring together instrumental scientific communities to have a very powerful alliance to tackle disease

Research Paper from the year 2016 in the subject Medicine - Human Genetics, , language: English, abstract: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is an abnormality in the structure and function of the heart and great vessels caused by embryonic development disorders, it is highly complex and is not fully understood yet. This study performs a computational analysis of the nsSNPs in the GATA4 gene, to identify the possible mutations and propose a modeled structure for the mutant protein that potentially affects its function. The nsSNPs were analyzed using 5 prediction tools: SIFT, Polyphen-2, I-Mutant 3.0, PhD-SNP and Project Hope. The SNPs on 3’UTR and 5’UTR regions were analyzed using PolymRTS and SNP Function Prediction softwares, respectively. Twenty nine nsSNPs were found to be deleterious and damaging by SIFT and 22 nsSNPs by PolyPhen server; 22 nsSNPs were found to be common in both SIFT and PolyPhen server. Also, 6 nsSNPs were observed to be highly deleterious and damaging as per SIFT and PolyPhen server. Moreover, the PolymiRTS results showed 34 SNPs in the 3’UTR region and only one SNP in 5’ UTR by SNP Function Prediction to be functionally significant. Hence, we hope our results will provide useful information that needed to help researchers to do further study in heart disease in children especially in our country

A modification to the Asymmetrically Clipped Optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM) technique, a well reported non-coherent optical implementation is proposed. A Modified ACO-OFDM (MACO-OFDM) system is developed to improve system performance at the expense of spectral efficiency. A MACO-OFDM system model is defined underpinned by a detailed mathematical framework verified through Monte Carlo simulations. System performance is compared to that of conventional ACO-OFDM. A 1.5 dB saving is achieved in the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of 4-QAM ACO-OFDM after applying the proposed modification; the theoretical and simulation results are in good agreement. As the constellation size increases, the improvement in BER performance decreases. The research then treats the impact of atmospheric turbulence on the performance of both conventional ACO-OFDM and the proposed MACO-OFDM system. A Single Input Multiple Output (SIMO) approach using multiple receivers is employed to mitigate the impact of atmospheric turbulence. The performance of MACO-OFDM outperforms that of ACO-OFDM by nearly 3 dB, 4 dB, and 5 dB as the number of receiving apertures (nRx) increases as 1, 2, and 4 respectively in weak atmospheric turbulence; in moderate turbulence the performance is improved by 2 dB, and 4.5 dB for nRx=2, and nRx=4; and in strong turbulence, the BER performance is enhanced by nearly 2 dB and 4 dB for nRx=2 and nRx=4. The channel capacity of MACO-OFDM has been shown to be half that of conventional ACO-OFDM. The capacity of SIMO MACO-OFDM architecture in atmospheric turbulent channel is evaluated.
