MEU PRIMEIRO ASSASSINATO

2017 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

The Jester's Frame

2017 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

Abstract: This study investigates the socio-political characteristics of the Egyptian political satire show, Albernameg's audience, as well as whether the audience considers the show a source of news. This is studied in relation to the effects of the show on its viewers' perceptions of current issues. The uses and gratifications approach and the framing theory are used as a theoretical framework. Qualitative content analysis resulted in choosing perceptions of two issues: the AIDS & virus C detection device, and coal introduction as an alternative source of generating electricity in Egypt, as the media frames that were used as a basis for the survey questions. The qualitative content analysis revealed that the two issues were framed negatively on Albernameg. The survey findings show that Albernameg audience is politically interested and attentive, exhibits low internal political efficacy and slightly high levels of external political efficacy, with levels of political knowledge ranging between medium and high. More than 50% of the sample considers Albernameg a source of news. The results suggest the presence of framing effects in relation to the two issues under consideration. Heavy viewers exhibit more negative perceptions of both issues. Viewers who watched the show for information and those who watched for entertainment both have negative perceptions of the two issues. There is an inverse correlation between perceived credibility of Bassem Youssef and viewers' perceptions of both issues. The higher the level of political knowledge, the more negative the perceptions of the two issues. More politically knowledgeable viewers are also slightly more likely to perceive Bassem Youssef as a credible source of information than less politically knowledgeable ones. These results pose political satire, and more specifically Albernameg, as a media literacy platform and a strong tool for influencing public opinion.

Institutional Theory and the Policy Problem of Vocational Education and Training and Its Development

2017 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

This thesis extends analysis of the policy problem of Egyptian Vocational Education and Training (VET) beyond the current supply/demand mismatch perspective and into a broader institutional analytic framework. It critically deploys concepts from Whitley's institutional framework (1999) and Wood and Frynas' (2006) Segmented Business Systems (SBS) archetype to the problem, complementing them with historical and political dimensions. These illustrate the continuities and discontinuities in key institutional features and relationships influencing VET since the military coup in the 1950s and through subsequent paradigm shifts. The institutional analysis illustrates that VET is embedded in a set of incoherent institutional arrangements that have constrained systemic development. Further, they have not supported development towards Western models suggested by international organisations. These have had limited effect. A key institutional relationship for VET; state-employer-union cooperation, is currently being developed by the ILO through its Social Dialogue Project (ILO SDP). This could, if effectively realised, enhance institutional actors' participation in VET and hence its effectiveness. This proposition is examined through empirical investigation of institutional actors' (i) mutual perceptions of state-employer-union cooperation and contributions to VET; and (ii) their perceptions of the ILO SDP and the ways in which it has influenced VET. These responses are verified on an enterprise level through two cases in the tourism sector. The investigation took place in three phases from July 2008 to April 2010 in Egypt, Switzerland and the UK, through triangulated data collection: documentation, 60 interviews, 2 focus groups and observation. The findings have theoretical and practical implications. On a theoretical level, the proposition that Egypt largely corresponds to the SBS archetype is confirmed. Suggestions for modifying Whitley's institutional framework include (i) a better integration of historical and political dimensions; and (ii) the inclusion of international organisations as a key institutional influence on state relations with social actors in developing countries. Practical conclusions confirm the ineffective levels of state-employer-union cooperation and contributions to VET. ILO attempts to develop these relationships through social dialogue were perceived to be largely ineffective by institutional actors. The ILO SDP has been constrained by institutional incoherencies which are difficult to change in the short- to medium term. Some positive experiences of effective state-employer-union cooperation and employer-employee interdependence were reported on regional and enterprise levels. These could possibly be expanded on by the ILO SDP as a bottom-up approach to enhancing social dialogue. Finally, the 2011 events could offer new institutional opportunities for enhanced representation of social actors in socio-economic matters which could possibly lead to their effective cooperation in VET and its development; an area which could be pursued in future research.

The Architecture of Yemen

2017 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

Until the early 1990s the southern and eastern towns of Yemen were extremely difficult to access. The result of nearly two decades of research, this is the first book to offer an in-depth investigation into the characteristic architecture of the region. The author's first hand research provides detailed insights into building techniques and methods, though still practiced, are little known outside the area. Refreshingly, the book moves out of the more familiar major cities into the hinterlands and explores regions that could be said to be the last strongholds of traditional Arab architecture. The author was allowed to visit locations and sites that had previously been closed to architectural historians. As a result of this privileged access, the text and images combine to convey unique insights and viewpoints: those of the master builders and house owners who actually create and inhabit the buildings.

The Architecture of Oman

2017 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

This book records and examines in detail for the first time both the modern and vernacular architecture of the Sultanate of Oman. The Sultanate's landscapes are striking in their contrasts - from the powerful, primary blues and greens of the country's lush oases and the Indian Ocean that laps at its shores, to its arid deserts and rugged mountains. There is a primordial quality in the art of its architecture, imbuing it with a spirit of minimalism and austerity, qualities which have defined the extent and form of architectural construction and urban growth, from the smallest vernacular towns of the interior and coastal regions, to the impressive modern buildings of the Sultanate's capital, Muscat. To date, little of this rich and varied architecture has been documented. With a combination of her own original research based on extensive fieldwork and surveys, and previously unpublished drawings, plans, illustrations and surveys from architects working in Oman, coupled with first-hand accounts from local master builders, Dr Damluji has succeeded in compiling the most definitive work so far on the architecture of the Sultanate. By investigating traditional and modern building processes, urban planning and design concepts, and with thorough contributions from other specialists, Dr Damluji analyses, from an architectural viewpoint, the extent of Oman's success compared with many other developing countries in maintaining its rich cultural heritage in the face of the demands necessitated by a rapidly changing urban landscape. Illustrated with over 1000 of the author's own colour photographs and some 200 plans and elevations, and with a foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales, the book represents an invaluable record of the architecture of an immensely diverse and fascinating country.
