2016 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

Can Emerging Market Central Banks Bail Out Banks? A+L4848 Cautionary Tale From Latin America

2016 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

This paper investigates whether developing and emerging market countries can implement monetary policies similar to those used by advanced countries during the recent global crisis - injecting significant amounts of money into the financial system without facing major short-run adverse macroeconomic repercussions. Using panel data techniques, the paper analyzes episodes of financial turmoil in 16 Latin America during 1995-2007. The results show that developing and emerging market countries should be cautious because injecting money on a large scale into the financial system may fuel further macroeconomic instability, increasing the chances of simultaneous currency crises.

Mother, Can I Trust the Government? Sustained Financial Deepening

2016 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

Only a minority of countries have succeeded in establishing a developed financial system, despite widespread financial liberalization. Confronted with this finding, the political institutions view claims that sustained financial deepening is most likely to take place in institutional environments where governments effectively impose constraints on their own powers in order to create trust. This paper identifies over 200 post-1960 episodes of accelerations in financial development in a large cross-section of countries. We find that the likelihood of an acceleration leading to sustained financial development increases greatly in environments that have high-quality political institutions.

Cutting-edge Issues in Business Ethics

2016 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

Business ethics originated in the United States as an offshoot of theoretical ethics and as part of a movement in applied ethics that was initiated with medical ethics. Although a few small religious-based colleges and universities offered courses in business ethics just after the Second World War, business ethics as an academic ?eld developed most seriously in many universities in the early 1970s. The ?eld of medical ethics was well-developed by then, and it was a natural step to think about ethical issues in business as well. There was also a public reaction to a number of corporate scandals (e.g., price ?xing, the Lockheed Japanese bribery allegations, the Goodyear airbrake scandal, etc. that encouraged universities to begin teaching the subject). Business ethics as an academic ?eld was originally developed by philosophers, most of whom had come out of the analytic or Anglo-American philosophical tra- tions and who had been trained in classical ethics, on Aristotle, Kant, Mill, Bentham and perhaps Dewey. The resulting ?eld then, has been dominated by this thinking. Although to date there are over 50 textbooks in business ethics, most textbooks in business ethics do not take into account contemporary continental philosophy. Although Marxism is sometimes taught in these courses, other more contemporary continental thinkers who could contribute substantially to the ?eld have been - nored. This phenomenon is iterated in the professional journals and in theoretical books on the topic.

Expositions of the Psalms 99-120

2016 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

Fifth volume of the long-awaited translation of one of Augustine’s classics and a great work in Christian literature. Newly translated by Maria Boulding, O.S.B., whose masterful translation of Augustine’s Confessions in the same series has been praised as being “of a different level of excellence from practically anything else in the market” (Bishop Rowan Williams, Monmouth, England). As the psalms are a microcosm of the Old Testament, so the Expositions of the Psalms can be seen as a microcosm of Augustinian thought. They recapitulate and focus the experiences of Augustine’s personal life, his theological reflections, and his pastoral concerns as Bishop of Hippo.

Calculation of Gamma-Ray Response Matrix for 5-cm NE-213 Organic Liquid Scintillation Detector

2016 · Book · Koleksi Perpustakaan

The gamma-ray response matrix is reported for a 5-cm NE-214 organic liquid scintallation detector. Gamma-ray response functions were determined by Monte-Carlo calculations of the pulse-height spectra. The calculational method was thoroughly tested by comparisons with measured results from several laboratory gamma-ray sources. The response matrix generated from these calculations is 186 x 93, covering a pulse-height range from 0.10 to 9.40 light units and an energy range from 0.22 to 11.99 MeV. The response matrix was tested by unfolding a variety of measured gamma-ray spectra. The detector efficiency is also presented. (Author).
